Sally Jane Algiere

Locally grown in a shoreline town in Connecticut, Sally is the sixth out of an unusually large family of eight. Having spent a great number of hours with her brothers during the day, she credits her quick wit and perseverance to the many tasks she was commanded to stand up to! Climbing trees, catching frogs and riding bikes were all early childhood pastimes! However, spending late hours in the evenings with her older sisters provided Sally with what she refers to as her "girl fuel". She feels fortunate to have a varied perspective on life as a result.

In addition, her early years of playing "war" and being at the receiving end of the injured, in the backyard of many a neighbor's home, it grew clear to Sally that her love for healing people was strong. She truly knew at a very young age that being a Nurse someday would become a reality. At 23 years old, that dream came true and her career at Yale New Haven Hospital commenced. Shortly into her career she married her college beau, Michael, and moved to Central Connecticut.

Sally worked as a Burn Nurse in the early years at Yale, and went on to work in more extensive capacities as the years passed. Another joy for Sally was managing a surgical unit before the birth of her first son, which was a great challenge that allowed her to use her strong positive personnel skills while still allowing her to administer patient care from time to time. Being a team player, and leader for that matter, has always been one of Sally's strong suits. After the birth of her second son, it was important to Sally to spend as much time with her children as possible; therefore she continued to keep her hands in the world of nursing, working part-time in varied clinical settings throughout the next several years. She feels fortunate to have had a career that allowed her to be both a stay at home Mom and career woman.

After nearly eighteen years as a Nurse in this large city hospital and having worked throughout the institution extensively, Sally felt her career path was narrowing and started to contemplate working towards a higher degree in Nursing.  Her last four years with Yale were spent delivering intense care to the HIV/AIDS population. With difficulty and mixed feelings she left a place she called her "second home" and somehow ended up as a co-host of "Defining Women" with her long time friend and soul sister Lisa!

These two have spent nearly nine years together as inseparable friends. It is easy to recognize the common bonds, which brought these two women together, some of which are: having their children at the same time, living in unfamiliar Central Connecticut and sharing the love of the water. They also oddly share the astrology sign "Scorpio", Lisa being on the cusp, Sally admitting to being the true Scorp! Truly one day they started talking over a cup of tea and are still doing so everyday, and every Monday on WLIS/WMRD. Sally never envisioned a career in radio as a venue she would explore, as she states, it was with Lisa's zany and relentless thoughts of "career ideas", and Sally's desire to do "something else" that Defining Women was born! In truth, Sally agreed to go along in the midst of taking three courses and working, secretly thinking she would do so just to get her friend on her way! One year later, Sally continues to sit beside her soul mate with delight. She truly credits Lisa with the hatching of Defining Women and is still shaking her head at her friend's "idea". The two women are having a blast and welcome anyone who dares to explore this crazy world in casual conversation, to join them Mondays at 12:30 LIVE on WLIS/WMRD.
